With its low growth habit of only 30-40 cm, Empress of India makes a great border plant. The flowers are a sure fire hummingbird magnet. How to Grow As nasturtiums resent transplanting, directly sow seed into well drained soil in late May 2.5 cm deep and 5 cm apart, thinning seedlings to 20 cm apart. Seed generally germinates within 12 days. Full sun is preferred. Partial shade is recommended in hot summer areas. Blooms have a peppery taste and are quite popular as a salad garnish. We recommend removing spent flowers to help lengthen the blooming period.
